State Emergency Operations Center activated due to storms

CLANTON, AL (WSFA) -

Alabama Governor Robert Bentley is activating the State Emergency Operations Center, located in Clanton, to a Level III. The activation was made in order to monitor any current or possible situations arising from heavy rainfall or flash flooding brought about by the weather system that is moving across the state.

Extremely large amounts of rainfall moved through the State of Alabama Sunday night and Monday morning. Flash flooding, which can occur rapidly and unexpectedly, remains a danger in many areas.

Currently, State and local first responders are monitor major impaired areas such as southern Jefferson and northern Shelby Counties where five to seven inches of rain has fallen.

Officials are also monitoring situations across southeast Alabama where rain soaked creeks and rivers continue to rise.

Motorist should avoid flooded roads and slow travel where standing water is present. Do not attempt to drive through flooded areas. Turn around and find another route to your destination or move to higher ground and wait for the waters to subside. Worse yet, flooding can wash away the road surface causing cars to become stuck and stall.

Six inches of water will reach the bottom of most passenger cars causing potential loss of control. One foot of water will float most vehicles.
