Animal shelter provides free vet services in Springfield

Pet owners in one city neighborhood had the chance to receive some free veterinary services on Saturday.

The Second Chance Animal Shelter set up shop at the Boston Road Mobile Home Park, offering free exams, vaccines, flea treatments and more.

The group out of North Brookfield is able to provide the services through grant money.

Organizers said they were ready to treat up to 400 pets on Saturday.

They said they are aware of what kind of an impact their services make for those who otherwise might not be able to afford them.

"We hear from the people that we come and visit how wonderful it is," said Wendy Hall, manager of Second Chance. "They just can't afford to go to the vet, and they need the vaccines. We find it's very important to get them out there. It's going to keep rabies down."

Saturday's clinic was put on in part by Kane's Krusade, a nonprofit organization that helps dogs in need in the greater Springfield area.
