Person of interest wanted in Jackson homicide

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
New leads in a Jackson homicide investigation could lead to an arrest. It all stems from newly-released surveillance video showing someone authorities say could be involved.

The footage is the first strong lead in the homicide investigation of 61-year-old Jerry Neal, found dead in his Millsaps Avenue apartment on March 13.

Neal was found dead with a gunshot wound to the upper chest, and family members said it appeared he had been robbed.

The footage shows a man wearing a T-shirt and shorts buying items at the Shell gas station on Fortification Street.

JPD Officer Colendula Green said the man, considered a person of interest by police, used Neal's credit card for the purchases on March 19.

In the video, the man then appears to walk to another vehicle attempting to gas up. Green said it looks like he's handing someone else the stolen credit card so they can purchase fuel for free.

Afterwards, the man walks back to his vehicle, a white 2013 or 2014 Nissan Altima.

Green said police are trying to get more surveillance video to get a better look at the person.

Neal's family said few details have been released by JPD, but the victim's daughter said she thinks it was someone he knew.

"One thing I can say is that it was somebody he was actually comfortable with or who was comfortable with him to be able to have access to him in that way," daughter Glenda Calbert said.

Calbert said her father's apartment on Millsaps Avenue was ransacked after he was shot, but remains puzzled as to why no arrests have been made in the case, nearly a month later.

"There's cameras that are behind me. We don't know if they do or don't work at the apartment complex, but you see a sign that's over there behind us that says the apartment complex is surveilled," Calbert said.

It's unclear if any footage from the apartment complex cameras was provided to Jackson police.

Meanwhile, the unidentified man's involvement in the homicide isn't clear yet. Police say they want to question him.

Calbert said she just wants closure.

"Sometimes you just have to give the family some kind of comfort to let them know that 'We are doing our best. We're doing something,'" Calbert said. "He won't be a cold case. He won't be a number that sits up on a shelf at the end of the day, because he has too many strong children standing behind him. His family's behind him, and we are going to get justice for him."

Now, authorities need the public's help in finding the individual in that surveillance footage.
