Former Uncle Bubba's workers search for new jobs

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The search is on for new jobs for former employees of Uncle Bubba's Oyster House, which abruptly shut its doors for good Thursday morning.

Many of those employees, some who'd been working for years at the popular seafood restaurant owned by celebrity chef Paula Deen and her brother Bubba Hiers, didn't plan on having to job hunt on Friday - hoping not to miss a paycheck.

According to the restaurant's reps, Heirs decided to close down the restaurant to explore other options for the waterfront property on which the restaurant is located.

The employees did receive a severance package, but with no warning at all the former employees are taking to the streets of downtown Savannah with resumes in hand desperately determined to find work.

The search for work hasn't turned out to be as difficult as many feared, however. The well known Savannah restaurant group Live Oak heard about the closure and reached out with open arms.

"It's a mutually beneficial situation," said Ray Clark with Live Oak. "They need work and we need people to work, so it seemed like the natural thing to do."

They hired about five employees Thursday and several have interviews Friday, hoping to do what they can for Savannah's important service industry.

"It's a community here in Savannah. The restaurant community is very tight knit and we don't want to see anyone go without a pay check," said Clark.

"You just have to get back out there and do what you have to do. I really don't want to go back home tonight until I have a job today. Until somebody says, ‘you are hired'. So that's what I want that's what I'm trying to do. And I'm going to put my best foot forward to do that," said Brian Ginn, a former Uncle Bubba's employee.

Ginn is interviewing for a position on Friday afternoon. There is hope for many other former employees. The Savannah restaurant community is coming together to help them find jobs.

Now that fall is officially upon us, it would be nice if Mother Nature would start acting like it. Unfortunately, the summer-like heat will last for most of this week. But, there are changes on the way.
