COVINGTON, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Unable to work because of her illness, a Covington mother says she is determined to see her two little girls grow up.

Sonya Burnett undergoes kidney dialysis multiple times a week and is in need of a heart and kidney transplant.

"I'm 39 years young, and I've been through a whole lot of stuff," she said.

It is a struggle for Burnett to get out of a wheelchair and into a car. When she gets home, it is tough for her to climb the steps to her front door.

Burnett has been on an organ transplant list since last July. She is also diabetic.

"My heart gets weaker and weaker. My kidneys end up failing," she said. "Right now, I'm at the end stage of renal failure."

Burnett says she went into congestive heart failure after her second daughter was born.

"I got toxemia and had high blood pressure," she recalled. "Fluid overflowed my body. I had to sit up and wrap towels around my legs because fluid would just seep."

All Burnett can do now is wait on the call from Vanderbilt Memorial University Medical Center in Nashville saying they have a heart and kidney for her.

"That's the most powerful thing in my life, is prayer, so I just ask everybody to keep praying for me, help me to hold on," she urged.

On Saturday, a special fundraiser for Sonya Burnett will be held at Covington Integrated Arts Academy from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

If you cannot make it to the fundraiser, donations can be made at any Regions Bank.
