Is there a crime problem on Jackson area college campuses?

CLINTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A recent report on crime on college campuses suggests there's a problem in our area. The numbers show thefts at local colleges on the rise, and some of the highest nationwide.

The national study says that 3 local colleges, rank in the top 10 when it comes to the most burglaries on campus. The data comes from the Office of Post Secondary Education.

In the report Mississippi College is ranked 5th, Hinds Community College in Raymond and Jackson State University are ranked 6th and 7th respectively, in the number of incidents reported on campus, per capita.

Mississippi College student Shawn Callahan said,

"It's rather shocking," said Mississippi College student Shawn Callahan. "I've been here for three years and haven't really been exposed to any type of violent crime or haven't worried at all about being robbed or heard of any burglaries happening in the area."

Students we talked to at Mississippi College say they feel their campus is safe, and haven't heard of burglaries in the area, nor have they been victims of any.

Medical student, Matt Pickich, "I guess the stats don't lie," said Medical student Matt Pickich. "I just don't deal with it, I haven't seen anything that would give it any concrete nature to me."

The data for the study was collected in 2012. Another disturbing number in the study, Mississippi ranks 6th when compared to other states, when it comes to drug arrests on college campuses.

We reached out to the colleges to reaction, but so far they have not responded.
