Suspects try to shoot police officer

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The hunt is on for two gunman who fired shots at a Jackson Police officer. The gun blasts happened off Northside Drive at the Northside Terrace apartment complex.

"I started hearing shots then started hearing some, boom boom," said Rochelle Buxton.

"I looked out my window and I saw a truck, a gray one, coming around the coroner doing about 50 miles per hour and hit my car," said Michael Ivy. "It slanted, hit his, hit the trailer, hit her car then hit about two more cars that was here."

The incident immediately intensified. The driver of the truck tried to run over a Jackson police officer then began shooting at him.

"The police officer was able to take cover and return fire," said Assistant Chief Lee Vance.

Vance said it all happened just before five Friday morning in the parking lot of Northside Terrace apartments when one of his officers spotted a stolen F-250 pick up truck that police believe is involved is several recent auto burglaries.

"One of the officers involved in the auto burglary detail actually discovered this vehicle behind the apartment complex," said Vance. "He was able to verify the tag information that this was the vehicle we were looking for."

That's when the two armed and dangerous suspects pulled up in a Nissan car and began the mayhem. Luckily, the officer was not injured.

The two suspects were able to get away, one driving the Nissan, the other driving the stolen pick up truck. Vance says the stolen F-250 truck was recovered on Royal Street just a few hours after the shooting. As for the suspects, they both remain on the run.

"I feel like we aren't safe in our own home," said Ivy.

"It was crazy, it was kind of crazy," said Buxton.

Right now the only description Jackson Police have of the two men are, the both are black males. One man was short and was wearing a black jacket. The other man had a white hat on.
