Man shot, killed after officers find his wife dead at Lincolnton home

A man is dead after a shootout with police at a Lincoln County apartment complex, investigators say.

The incident was reported at 6:05 p.m. Thursday on the 800 block of Salem Church Road.

Officers found the body of a woman, later identified as 39-year-old Tara Lynn Osburn, at a side door to the home, according to the Lincolnton Police Department.

Several witnesses at the scene told officers they had seen a gray pick-up truck behind the home earlier that day. The officers soon learned that the victim's estranged husband, 40-year-old Anthony Ray Osburn, drove a truck matching the description.

Neighbor Budgy Rice said he told detectives Thursday that he saw the that truck parked in an odd place.

"There's a silver four-door pick-up truck backed right into the air conditioning unit," said Rice.

Officers said they tracked the truck to the Colonial Village Apartments, where they found Anthony Osburn driving in circles around the complex.

When an officer attempted to stop him, Osburn parked his truck in a parking space and opened fire on the officer. That officer returned fire and Osburn ran to his apartment at nearby Lantern Ridge Apartments.

The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office then brought in a SWAT team to secure the area. Nearby apartments were soon evacuated and the authorities began negotiating with Osburn.

Police say that during those negotiations, Osburn admitted to shooting his wife and, at one point, refused to negotiate further, telling officers, "Give me five minutes and you can come in and get my dead body."

After negotiating for more than two hours, the SWAT team used tear gas to force him out. Shortly after 12:30 a.m. Osburn came out of the apartment and opened fire again at the officers.

The officers returned fire, striking Osburn. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Once he exited the entrance door he was armed with the gun in his hand and pointed it in the direction of my officers," said Lincoln County Sheriff David Carpenter, "A shot was fired. My officers returned fire. The suspect is deceased at this time."

The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting.
