TUPELO, MS -

(WMC-TV) - A Tupelo, Miss. man was accused of sending ricin-laced letters to President Barack Obama, but it was soon discovered he was being set up.

A Mid-South filmmaker is now working to tell Kevin Curtis' story. The documentary is called "I didn't do it."

Elvis impersonator Kevin Curtis was arrested and accused of sending the ricin letters to the president, but charges were later dropped after an acquaintance pleaded guilty.

"I was a reporter at the time for the Oxford Eagle and the federal courthouse is right across the street," said Melanie Addington, the documentary's director.

Melanie Addington remembers national news coverage of Kevin Curtis' arrest.

"As soon as I saw Kevin I thought, 'Something's not right. This guy just doesn't look like he's out to kill the president.'"

Prosecutors thought Curtis sent the letter because some of the words matched quotes on his Facebook page.

In court, Curtis told investigators he was being set up by James Everett Dutschke. After a few days of testimony, Dutschke was eventually arrested and later plead guilty.

"A lot of what happened to Kevin is something that could happen to anybody," said Addington. "Anybody can look at your Facebook page and decide to write something that sounds like you to get you in trouble."

Addington says one year after his arrest, Curtis' life is still in shambles from being wrongfully accused.

"People, of course, in his own town avoid him like the plague, his family and he have a lot of conflicts, so it's been really hard on him," she said.

Addington says she is getting help from Mississippi filmmaker Hudson Hickman, who worked on popular TV shows like "The Love Boat" and "MacGyver."

"We hope to be done by the end of the year," she added. "Then it's up to if we get distribution or if we go to film festivals, but it will be out there for people to see."

Addington's team is ready to edit the project. They have started a grassroots campaign to raise money. To learn more about the project and make a donation, click here: http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/i-didn-t-do-it-a-documentary
