Visitors flock to South Mississippi to enjoy fun in the sun

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

The sound of seagulls chirping and the warmth from the sun is something Hannah Cole and her family said they have longed for all winter.

"We gave ourselves about a half an hour to pack and we decided let's go somewhere warm and started driving south," Cole said.

The Coles are from Northern Wisconsin. After surviving a record breaking freezing winter, they decided it was time to thaw out.

"We just started driving and waited until we saw a beach that we thought looked pretty nice and we just stopped and now we are here," Cole said.

While many of us South Mississippians still think it is a bit chilly to be on the beach, that is not the case for vacationers. In fact, the people with the Biloxi Beach Company in front of the Coliseum said this has been the busiest spring in ten years.

"I've been having a blast," Joshua Cox said. "We have just been down on the beach; we have done some jet skiing."

The Curtis family has also been enjoying some fun in the water.

"I can't keep them out of the water," Bethany Curtis said.

For the youngsters in the Curtis family, this is their first time at the beach.

"We just got here and keep on staying because we love it," Curtis said.

A group of University of Nebraska students are also enjoying Biloxi.

"This is, like, super nice to us," Taylor Wagner said. "It's, like, 40 degrees or so in Lincoln right now."

In fact, they were having so much fun, they said they will be back.

"Definitely, we were just talking about that," Wagner said.

Tourism leaders hope the booming spring will be an indication of what is to come this summer.
