A man faces serious charges after deputies caught him trying to smuggle contraband into the Hinds County Detention Center.
Sheriff Tyrone Lewis says the suspect, 23-year-old Jacob Ramonte Funchess, was caught with a little help from man's best friend and 3 On Your Side.
"This is actually from a follow-up that was broken by Channel 3," Sheriff Lewis said. "And after that story was broken, we decided to do some proactive measures, put some proactive measures in place."
That story he's referring to was an exclusive February expose on inmates in the Hinds County Detention Center, using contraband and posting pictures on social media.
Sheriff Lewis said after that story aired, they beefed up patrols and started using K-9 units to make the rounds. Those extra patrols helped them catch a break.
"Our K-9 officer and K-9 unit was able to discover a male subject hiding in the woods next to the Raymond detention center," Sheriff Lewis said.
Deputies found a bag containing sixteen cell phones, marijuana, tobacco and in a bizarre twist, ladies' undergarments.
"I don't know the significance of that attire, but I can tell you that it's something that we would like to know, and if it's a trend out there, we need to follow," Sheriff Lewis said.
Sheriff Lewis adds Funchess' arrest also means what they're doing is working, even if it means uncovering some bad seeds in the department.
"We are trying to attempt to find out if there are some more acquaintances with him and to see whether or not there were more individuals involved other than himself, to include employees and other inmates," he said.
Funchess is charged with possession of marijuana and attempting to introduce contraband into a correctional facility.
