Caribbean Adams named Miss. Spelling Bee winner

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Twenty-seven students from all regions of Mississippi competed live on Mississippi Public Broadcasting on March 18 for the Mississippi Championship Spelling Bee Title.  The Mississippi Association of Educators has sponsored this event for the past six years.

MAE President Joyce Helmick said, "I am pleased to announce that Caribbean Adams is the Mississippi winner of the MAE sponsored Scripps Spelling Bee, held today in Jackson. Caribbean is a 7th grade student at New Hebron Attendance Center in the Lawrence County School District. That Caribbean won in the 33rd round is a testament to the achievements of all the student participants. And because any student under 16 in any elementary public, private, parochial or home-school can participate, we're especially proud that Caribbean is a public school student. Through Mississippi Public Broadcasting, MAE has been able to showcase the scholastic talents of Mississippi students."

The MAE tells us that the Mississippi Champion, Caribbean will advance to the 87th Annual Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. in May to compete against Spelling Bee Champions from every state.  They will fund all expenses for the Mississippi Spelling Champion and one parent to attend the National Spelling Bee.

"MAE is committed to ensuring that Mississippi students are represented at the national level," said President Helmick.

The MAE says that during the fall and winter, schools conduct spelling bee programs at the classroom and school level.  School winners send their spelling champions to the district level where they compete in a county-wide spelling bee.  According to the organization, these county winners then compete at the Mississippi Spelling Bee.

"The Bee helps students understand the underlying structure and architecture of many languages. It turbo-charges their understanding of spelling and dramatically expands their vocabularies. Students learn concepts that will help them all their lives," said President Helmick.

As Ja-Naya Thompson's short life was celebrated, there were a lot of tears and hugs as hundreds of people paid their respects during the visitation and the funeral service. People told me they went to Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church for two reasons, to mourn the loss of five year old Ja-Naya and to show support to the parents who must now face life without their beloved child.More >>
