GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Eleven people, including four children, are homeless after a kitchen fire spread through a Gulfport apartment complex Thursday afternoon.
Around 3:30pm, five fire engines and 17 firefighters responded to the 200 block of Pass Road. When the first unit arrived, firefighters saw heavy fire and smoke coming from one of the three, single story apartments.
It took about 30 minutes to bring the blaze under control.
Investigators said the fire started in the kitchen, but spread into the living room and caused extensive fire and smoke damage. The neighboring apartments also were damaged by smoke.
One of the renters was gone when the fire started and all other residents were evacuated; no injuries were reported. Two dogs were found inside the complex; one died from smoke inhalation.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The Red Cross has offered temporary lodging to the displaced residents.
