In recent days, we find ourselves asking what the heck is going on at Beauvoir. The last home of Jefferson Davis has become a symbol of controversy instead of a symbol of history. A lot of the controversy apparently centers around the flying of the confederate battle flag on the property.
The executive director has resigned, and others have left as well, including Andi Oustelet, recently honored for her volunteer work at Beauvior. The president of board who runs Beauvoir has remained silent. That is unacceptable. There should be dialog, there should be openness about the future of this important shrine.
Beauvior is a coast jewel, and should be treated as such. It should not be treated as a pawn in a silly battle over southern pride.
Beauvoir is on the way, we believe, to becoming a world class museum with an important mission. That progress has been derailed at the moment. It's time for the powers that be to get Beauvoir back on track.
