BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

A group of children got a special treat Tuesday in Biloxi. Professional golfer, Fred Funk, stopped by the Biloxi Family Resource Center to read them a story.

PGA golfer Fred Funk came to the coast for the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic. The trip involved more than just a golf tournament.

"It was really neat to interact with the kids and see how they react to me," said Funk.

Chevron and the Excel by 5 initiative partnered together to make the day happen. For Funk, supporting education made it all worth it.

"I really enjoyed school, when I was in school. I wasn't the greatest student, but I enjoyed school," said Funk.

He said he knew the importance of reading first hand. After he finished second grade, he moved to another school. When he got to his new school, his teachers found that he was a lot further behind than the other kids.

"The second grade teacher that I was at, at the other school, never taught us to read. So that entire class had to go back and redo second grade again and learn how to read, and I was one of them," said Funk.

Funk said he was hooked after hearing about Mississippi's Excel by 5 program. Bob Clay is the Executive Director of Excel by 5. He says the Classic does more for the area than just bringing in tourism dollars.

"They support the community, because without organizations like the Gulf Resort Classic, you know, they'd just be playing golf. But here, they're making a difference," said Clay.

Susan Hunt agreed. She's the Certification Manager for Excel by 5 in Biloxi. Seeing a professional athlete take time to read a book to children meant a lot to Hunt.

"I think it's wonderful, because so many times we forget about what's really important, and his reading to the children was absolutely awesome, and the children loved it," Hunt said.

Funk gave all the children a signed visor and a special book for coming to the reading. He will be competing in the Gulf Resort Classic starting on Thursday at Fallen Oak in Biloxi.
