CHURCH HILL, TN (WJHL) - A 911 recording reveals the frantic moments a husband called for help after Church Hill, TN police say his wife crashed her car into a Hawkins County Church - claiming God told her to do it.

Moments later, police say she stabbed her husband.

Stephanie Hamman is charged with attempted first-degree murder and felony vandalism. Hamman told Church Hill police she was angry because her husband was “worshipping the NASCAR race at Bristol,” according to the release.

Church Hill police released a photo of the damage left behind after investigators say Stephanie crashed her car through the doors of Providence Church.

Steven Hamman told Church Hill police just before 10 p.m. Sunday that his wife drove her car through the front doors of Providence Church. He went in the building to check on her after she called him from the church and found her lying in front of the altar. She then stabbed him in the chest with a large kitchen knife.

"I don't know what's gotten into my wife. She went and wrecked her car into the church down here (sighs) I don't know what's wrong with her," said Mr. Hamman on the 911 recording.

He pulled the knife from his chest, returned to his apartment at The Landings, on Silver Lake Road, which is across the street from the church, and waited on police and emergency workers to arrive.

Stephanie was found by police around 20 minutes later at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport. She was read her rights by Church Hill Police Officer Dustin Dean.

According to the news release, Stephanie said she had decided to live for God, and that God told her she should not smoke marijuana all day and night. God said that she only needed to smoke pot to relax at night.

She also said God wanted her to get in the church.

According to the release, she said, “So God told me He wanted me in there, so I drove my car through the front doors.”

Stephanie continued speaking to police and said the devil told her to bring the knife with her.

“I laid down in front of the altar until he got there,” she said, according to the news release. “I prayed I would not have to use it on him, but I did.”

She then asked if her husband was dead and said she smokes a lot of “weed.”

“I love to smoke it,” she said, according to the release. “Sometimes when I do, I start seeing things that others don’t. Isn’t God good? He told me this would happen, and just look, I am okay.”

"One of the statements she apparently has made was that she attended this church, and she was baptized here on Sunday - which is incorrect. We've never known her to even visit here, and certainly didn't have a baptism here yesterday. It's kind of a bizarre story behind it, and not really sure at this point what to think of all that," Providence Church Pastor Joel Trigg said.

Trigg said he had no idea until Monday morning, the events leading up to Stephanie's car barreling through his front doors.

Stephanie was charged with attempted first-degree murder and felony vandalism. She remains in jail without bond as of Tuesday evening.

Steven was reported to be in fair condition at HVMC Monday afternoon, according to a Wellmont spokesperson.

Stephanie remains in jail without bond as of Tuesday evening.
