JACKSON, MS (WLOX) - Head coach Owen Miller won two state titles in the 1980's as a player under legendary head coach Bert Jenkins at Gulfport High.
Saturday night he guided the Admirals to their ninth state championship coming from behind to beat Grenada 64-59.
Gulfport held a 16 point second half lead until Grenada rallied.
The Chargers (23-12) grabbed its first lead of the game 59-58 with 54.4 seconds left on the clock on two free throws.
Jonathan Floyd hit two free throws giving the Admirals a 60-59 advantage.
The Admirals connected on crucial free throws down the stretch to stretch their lead to 5.
Jahshire Hardnett who had 18 first half points and Dimitri Cook both hit free throws to pull away from the Chargers.
Hardnett led the Admirals (32-3) with 30 points. He drilled 11 of 21 shots from the field and 6 of 8 free throws.
Dimitri Cook scored 11 points and Jonathan Floyd scored 10.
Joniah White, a 6-foot-11 senior who signed with Louisiana Tech, led Grenada with 15 points and 17 rebounds. Gulfport was out rebounded by the Chargers 40-28.
Coach Bert Jenkins and his long-time assistant coach Gerald Austin were in attendance. The duo helped lead Gulfport High School to 7 state championships.
Gulfport athletic director Bryan Caldwell won the 8th state title as the Admirals head coach back in 2002 and now Owen Miller leads Gulfport to a ninth overall state championship.
