BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - The grills were fired up Saturday on the Biloxi Town Green for the 8th annual Barbecue Cook Off. There were visitors from all over, some who even felt over dressed. A group from Louisiana was decked out from head to toe in their St. Patrick's Day attire.
"We're getting a lot of looks and wondering why no one else is dressing up, and we're just trying to figure this out," said Tracey.
While they were having plenty of fun, nerves were setting in for the barbecue cook off contestants. This year's contest included three categories: chicken, ribs, and brisket. Most of the entries were groups just looking to support the annual festival.
"The bank is very big with community activities, and this is just a small way we show support to Biloxi Main Street and all its endeavors," said Paul Guichet with Peoples Bank.
Guichet and his team are first time participants in the competition, but that doesn't mean they are amateurs on the grill.
"What we're hoping to do is prepare some good food, and hopefully the judges will be impressed with it and we'll see how it turns out," said Guichet.
The judges were from local restaurants like the IP Casino and Half Shell Oyster House. One judge in particular felt like some of these rookie grill masters may actually have been chefs in disguise.
"There was some great chicken out there. We had 29 different boxes of chicken to taste so there was some really good chicken in there," said Half Shell Oyster House General Manager, John Graham.
There were first through fifth place trophies in each category, and of course the winner gets to take home bragging rights.
