GAUTIER, MS (WLOX) - Monday evening, Gautier Mayor Gordon Gollott gave his city an update on how things are going. This was his first State of the City Address since being sworn in this past summer. There was a lot of talk from Mayor Gollott about new developments, businesses, parks and beautification projects.
When he opened it up for questions, a couple of citizens saw a chance to voice their concerns. Gordon Nelms was concerned that law enforcement wasn't going to be able to keep up, but this meeting put his worries to rest.
"It made me feel very confident about what the city of Gautier is doing," said Nelms.
Frances Avgerinos and her husband started raising their family in Gautier 13 years ago.
"It was great to see the vision we have for the city," said Avgerinos.
She wants to make sure the city's plans are in her family's best interest.
"Where are they coming from? The infrastructure? Who is going to be shopping at the new malls? Who will be attending our schools? Do we have a plan for them and for development?"
According to the mayor, all these things have been taken into consideration. He said there is hardly a risk of failure.
"This is going to be a catalyst year for us. We are going to bust wide open at the seams, and I can't wait," said Gollott.
Not only is he excited about the new projects, he said he also looks forward to more people experiencing one of his favorite things to do in the city.
"It's absolute good fishing out in this area, you know? And it's a great place to live," said Gollott.
There were several developments talked about in the meeting. One was the rebuilding of the Singing River Mall area. Mayor Gollott said the site will become a tourist destination for the city. But, it could take two years or more to see that project to completion.
