NEW ORLEANS, LA (WLOX) - The Coast Guard search for the fisherman who went missing off the coast of Alabama Thursday has been suspended.
According to a Cost Guard media release, Benjamin Sorrells, 35, was a crewman on the fishing vessel AC III when he reportedly slipped and fell overboard. The release said the crew of the boat attempted to rescue Sorrells several times, but he was not wearing a life jacket.
Rescue crews searched more than 1,980 square miles over a 34 hour period.
"We offer our deepest condolences to the friends and family of Mr. Sorrells," said Coast Guard Commander Eric King, Chief of Response, Sector Mobile. "The Coast Guard would like to remind all boaters, whether recreational or commercial, the importance of wearing your life jacket."
The search is suspended pending further developments.
