A 23-year-old man is charged with second-degree cruelty to a juvenile rather than murder for the death of his 6-month-old son.
District Attorney Hillar Moore, III said that an East Baton Rouge Parish Grand Jury indicted Curtis King for the cruelty charge in relation to the death of Aiden King.
"They made the right decision," Moore said. "Based on the facts of that case and the statues, that was the appropriate decision of the jury."
King is accused of abusing and neglecting his infant son beginning on May 31, 2013. On that day emergency workers were called to King's home on after 80 percent of Aiden's body was badly burned. The child was allegedly placed in scalding bath water.
Aiden was rushed to the hospital and recovered enough to be released.
The next reported incident happened on Oct. 29, 2013. EMS workers were again called to King's home. This time Aiden was unresponsive. The child was rushed to the hospital and placed on life support. He never recovered and was pronounced dead on Nov. 6, 2013.
Along with the cruelty charges, King is accused of possession with the intent to distribute marijuana. The drugs were found inside his home the day they responded to last emergency call for help.
An autopsy revealed that Aiden died of asphyxiation.
