MOSS POINT, MS (WLOX) -

"Our hearts are broken..." Magnolia Middle School Principal JoAnn Pettaway spoke for a community when she said those words Friday.

Moss Point is in mourning for 12-year-old Lorel Malone. The 7th grader died after a fight at school Thursday.

Officials from the school district, police department, and city all joined together for a news conference Friday afternoon to express their sympathies to the families of both boys involved in the fight.

They said local pastors and counselors from Singing River Hospital have been at the school providing counseling to the students and staff.

Police Chief Keith Davis asked parents to talk to their kids about the fight and the events that led up to the fight which eventually led to Malone's death. He said any detail, no matter how seemingly insignificant, may be able to help in their investigation.

"It's very important that evidence is uncovered carefully and without prejudice," Chief Davis said.

Lorel's mother, Lakenisa Nobles, also spoke briefly at the news conference. She described Lorel as a sweet boy who was not a bully.

"If you knew him, you loved him," she said.

Danielle Thomas is in Moss Point today gathering more information about what exactly happened at the school, and how the community is coming together to support those affected by this tragedy. Watch for her story later today on WLOX News and WLOX.com.
