BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Deputies with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office were called to the 7600 block of Airline Highway for reports of a child wandering in a parking lot.

When deputies arrived, they learned the 7-year-old child lived in the 3500 block of Victoria Drive, more than a mile from where he was found and across Airline Highway, which is a four-lane highway.

The mother of the child, 46-year-old Veronica Stewart, was found inside of her trailer and she told deputies that she did not know that her child had left.

Child Services was called and Stewart admitted to the deputies that she knew her son had left the trailer, but she "figured he was around the trailer park somewhere" and that she didn't know he had left the area.

Stewart also told deputies that she didn't have anyone else looking after her son and figured he "would show up eventually."

Reports show this is the third time Stewart's son was found wandering and the police were called.

Child services took custody of Stewart's minor son and daughter and arrested her on charges of criminal abandonment. She was taken to the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison where she is being held on a $5,000 bond.

When the WLOX First Alert Weather Team issues an Alert Day for South Mississippi, it is because we believe the  weather will impact your day. The current Alert Day is because of the high rainfall totals we have seen with the potential for more rain. In fact, a Flash Flood Watch is in effect through Tuesday evening.
