Rescue crews helped rescue a child from a narrow ledge after falling from a cliff Wednesday.
MORGAN COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -
A small boy fell off a cliff in Morgan County, Wednesday evening.
It happened around 5 p.m. on G Hudgins Drive in the Eva community. Dozens of volunteer firefighters and emergency personnel helped in rescuing the child.
Authorities said 4-year-old Joseph Hudgins was in his yard when he fell off the cliff. His father, Jeremy Hudgins, tried to get to him and lost his footing.
"When we got here, both of them were underneath the ledge, probably about 50, 60 feet off the cliff. We worked with Morgan County Rescue Squad, got them here, got our EMTs down there. They started giving them treatment," said Eva Volunteer Fire Department Captain Gary Livingston.
Volunteers with Oden Ridge and other emergency personnel assisted Eva VFD with the rescue effort. They eventually built a human chain in order to reach Joseph and get him to safety.
"There was one little pathway about a foot wide that the people could walk up and down, and after we got to the patient, he was handed from person to person up to the top of the cliff," said Livingston.
The 4-year-old was conscious and alert as he was boarded onto a helicopter that flew him to Huntsville Hospital. "He was awake and crying, which is a good sign," said Livingston. "If a kid's not crying after something like that, you would suspect serious injuries."
It took roughly 90 minutes to transfer Joseph from the ledge, past the cliff, and onto solid ground. He suffered scrapes and bruises. His father suffered a concussion trying to go over the bluff to rescue the child. Both are home resting.
