Congress is finally taking action to undo the sharp increases in flood insurance that many of us in South Mississippi have been facing. The new law would tone down the 2012 overhaul of the federal flood insurance program that people living in flood prone areas depend on to recover when their homes are flooded.
Among the changes; a cap on how much flood insurance premiums could rise each year. Home sellers would also be able to pass on their flood insurance rate to those buying their home.
We understand the effort to control the cost of federal flood insurance, but without these changes many in Mississippi and across the nation would be facing premium hikes they cannot afford. We hope Congress will act quickly.
