Wiggins parade rolls on Lundi Gras

WIGGINS, MS (WLOX) -

Crowds of people crammed the streets of downtown Wiggins for the 30th Annual Lundi Gras parade. Last year the parade was canceled due to the weather. The bitter cold Monday wasn't enough for the organizers of the Wiggins Mardi Gras parade to cancel it two years in a row.

Last year, the rain was so bad, the city did without the Mardi Gras fun.

"This year we were really worried about the weather coming into today, but it's turning out to be beautiful and the parade's going to be a success," said Stone County Chamber President John O'Neal.

That's why, for revelers, the cold was certainly not enough to keep them from catching generous amounts of throws in their hometown.

Shameah McCray came to the parade with friends and said the parade was still fun despite the cold.

"Really, I mean it's just good to see people we know. People we grew up with. If the weather was a little warmer it would be outstanding," said Tim Williams.

Twenty-one entries rolled down the streets of Wiggins. A panel judged all the entries that included the Stone County High School band and the MGCCC color guard and band.

There were also creatures walking the one mile parade route. Unfortunately, cuteness wasn't all you needed to be considered one of the best entries.

"The first place was Bank of Wiggins. The second place was Tanner Equipment and third place was Krewe of That. And this is such a great occasion to bring Stone County into the Mardi Gras season and bring people together to have a great time," said Dr. Marie Hine a volunteer for the Wiggins parade.

Many of the entries featured the parade's disco theme. This year the king was Garry Kopp and the queen was Suzan Stephens Bounds.

And there was an extra set of grand marshals because of the parade cancellation last year. Last year's grand marshals are Beau Carpenter and Marleen Moore. This year's grand marshals are Sean Courtney and Micholyn Yager Barnes.
