TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

We've broken snowfall records and have had one of the top five coldest winters to date in Toledo. Local business owners say they don't need to hear stats to know it's been a rough season. They say weather has caused them to set some records of their own, but not the type they want to see.

It's been cold, snowy, icy and, of course, there are potholes that come along with all that. Local shop owners say they're not surprised business is down, they're just hoping it warms up soon so they can bounce back.

"It's not real easy. It's tough being in business right now," said Carolyn Giraudeau, owner of Kay's Cake & Candy Supplies, which sells baking supplies and holds cake decorating classes.

According to Giraudeau, business usually falls in the winter, but she says this winter is unlike any other.

"It's the worst one in quite a few years actually," said Giraudeau. "People just don't come out in bad weather like that, in fear of falling, having an accident, whatever."

When people don't come out, money doesn't come in.

Giraudeau says she even had to postpone a session of cake decorating classes because of the weather and poor road conditions. Like most other business owners, she's ready for this winter to end.

"I just said, 'We will wait until the weather breaks,'" said Giraudeau.

Although spring may be a few weeks away, business owners can look forward to warmer temps at the end of this week.

We're hearing a lot of complaints about bad potholes in northwest Ohio. So we've created a whole section where you can learn how to file a claim, plus view our slideshow of the worst potholes around Toledo.
