Getting fit can be fun

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Ever thought that getting fit could be fun?

As Jewell Hillery reports, obesity got a few punches when fitness and fun teamed up at the Metro Center Mall.

High energy, Good music and a little coordination is all you need to succeed at March Aerobics.

"It's always fun when you're moving around like that it was lots of fun," said class participant Annette White.

The March Aerobics class was led by former JSU Sonic Boom drum major Michael Haynes during the "Our End to Fight Obesity," program at the Metro Center Mall.

Many participants worked up a sweat without even realizing it.

"I always feel good when I'm exercising it makes me feel better," said White.

Brothers Robert and Richard Daniels of Parallel Fitness, also introduced the crowd to their specialty called Drill Fit Aerobics. Their technique also focuses on synchronized exercise with upbeat music. The duo got serious about helping the community get fit after heart failure hit close to home.

"We had a death in family it kind of pushed us in that area to help everybody else out," said Richard.

"I'm ready to do the boxing for the first time with the gloves on," said participant Jacqueline Torrey.

Torrey took her first jabs at coach and trainer Freeman Watkins. Jackson's Ward Four Councilman De'Keither Stamps, who says more people are dying in drive-thrus than drive-bys also took some punches up towards better health.

Apart of staying fit also includes monitoring your health. It's so important to have your blood pressure checked on a regular basis because high blood pressure is a silent killer.

"A lot of times a patient may have a blood pressure that's extremely high maybe even at stroke range and not even know it," said Dr. Justin Turner of Turner Care.

Regardless of what you do to stay healthy, the main thing is to keep moving.

The program was hosted by the Mu Sigma chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. and the Tugaloo College Owens Health and Wellness Center.
