Governor issues state of emergency due to forecasted weather system

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Gov. Phil Bryant issued a state of emergency Sunday afternoon for the possibility of significant ice accumulations in the northern half of the state and severe thunderstorms or tornadoes in the central and southern parts of the state.

A state of emergency is an administrative tool that authorizes the use of additional state resources for this storm system.

"It may seem difficult to accept with today's warm temperatures, but the National Weather Service has predicted winter weather and severe storms for parts of the state," Gov. Bryant said.

"Residents should take necessary precautions now before the bad weather arrives," Gov. Bryant added.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency has partially activated the State Emergency Operations Center for key state agencies such as MEMA, the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, the Mississippi Department of Transportation, the Mississippi Department of Health and the Mississippi Department of Human Services. The American Red Cross and Salvation Army are also staffing the SEOC.

The National Weather Service forecasts northwest Mississippi and the Delta area could see up to three quarters of an inch of ice, while other parts could see anywhere from a tenth to a quarter inch of ice accumulation.

This could create hazardous driving conditions in some areas, especially on bridges and overpasses. Ice accumulations can also cause power outages.

The NWS forecast also calls for a limited threat of severe thunderstorms with perhaps a tornado or two for a majority of central and south Mississippi as a strong cold front pushes across the state Sunday night through Monday morning.

Residents are asked to report any damage to their county emergency management director.

A directory of those directors can be found on the MEMA website, www.msema.org, and on our free mobile phone app by searching MEMA.

For the latest on road conditions, go to www.mdottraffic.com, download the free MDOT mobile phone app or call 511.

The best way to get up-to-date information during this event is to "Like" MEMA on Facebook, or "Follow" us on twitter.

Now that fall is officially upon us, it would be nice if Mother Nature would start acting like it. Unfortunately, the summer-like heat will last for most of this week. But, there are changes on the way.
