Winter weather affects Sylvania businesses

SYLVANIA, OH (Toledo News Now) -

It's the hottest-selling flag during this cold winter:  The Yankee Doodle Flag Shop in Sylvania Township has a banner that reads "We Surrender"- as in to winter.

A friend gave store owner Fred Bretzloff the idea for the design.

"We've had a lot go up to Michigan and out east into the New England states," Bretzloff said.

Up the street at Handel's Ice Cream Shop, business has been cold. But what do you expect with sub-zero temperatures?

"I've closed seven days this year," said owner Chris Boyd. "Been open 11 years, I haven't closed seven days in those 11 years. Weather played havoc on business this year."

In downtown Sylvania, the big chill has hampered business. That's why they held 'The Cure for Cabin Fever' until 8:00 Thursday night.

Shops and restaurants offered special discounts to get folks out and about.

"We really want to encourage local businesses not to close. So how do you do that? You encourage business," said Pat Nowak of the Sylvania Area Chamber of Commerce.

When things do thaw out, Yankee Doodle has yet another flag ready for sale. It reads "We Survived."
