ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Local first responders would have to consult with state environmental regulators on how to handle toxic spills under a bill that passed the state house Wednesday.

Environmental groups began pushing for the law after a series of spills revealed problems in emergency responses.

For example In 2010, firefighters poured water on a chemical plant fire and ended up washing chemicals into a creek and causing a fish kill. Albany fire officials say the extra input will help.

"Our job is to work together so if anything does happen, that we protect the community as best we can and the more resources we have, the more expertise in this areas, we have a better outcome," said Ron Rowe, AFD Deputy Chief.

The bill passed the House unanimously and is now waiting for a vote in the Senate.
