LAFAYETTE, LA (WAFB) -

An alleged carjacker was thwarted by his inability to drive a stick shift, according to police.

The incident happened in a parking lot on E. Gloria Switch Road on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at roughly 4 p.m. The victim called police after the suspect, Harold Sam, 18, allegedly attempted to steal her car.

"The victim told police she was entering her vehicle when the suspect forcefully removed her and threw her to the ground," Cpl. Paul Mouton, Lafayette Police Department, said. "Once inside the vehicle, the suspect was unable to operate it due to the fact it was a manual transmission."

The victim, who did not sustain any injuries, claims that Sam ordered her to get back into the car, but she refused. At that point he gave up and took off running.

"Officers responding to the scene located the suspect a short time later," Cpl. Mouton added.

Sam was arrested and charged with attempted carjacking, attempted simple kidnapping, resisting an officer, and possession of marijuana. He was booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional where he is being held in lieu of a $30.000 bond.
