JACKSON, MS (WLOX) -

The Institutes of Higher Learning announced Thursday it has selected Dr. Alfred Rankins, Junior as its preferred candidate to lead Alcorn State University.

Rankins is an Alcorn State graduate and a native of Greenville, Mississippi. Board members call him the perfect fit to lead Alcorn State today and in the future.

Dr. Rankins also said he believes he's "the right fit at the right time."

"I am so incredibly humbled to lead Alcorn State University."

He's determined to make Alcorn the most student friendly campus in the country.

"Alcorn will have a strong presence in the public schools in the local community, particularly those that are struggling. This is my vision for my university," he said as he accepted the IHL's nomination.

Dr. Rankins will visit Alcorn State campuses along the western side of Mississippi next week. After those visits, the IHL board will decide whether to name Dr. Rankins as Alcorn's next president.
