Hinds Supervisors remember Lumumba

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

"Monday I was scheduled to meet with Mayor Lumumba and his staff. We had a meeting regarding the communication system at that time, so I was not able to meet with him. I'm heartbroken I did not have that one-on-one meeting with him," says Darrel McQuirter, President of the Hinds County Board of Supervisors.

McQuirter says he was eager to meet with Mayor Chokwe Lumumba to discuss all of the Hinds County projects that overlap with City of Jackson endeavors; the E-911 system and a proposed wastewater treatment plan, for example. McQuirter knew Lumumba would be receptive.

"His willingness just to take on hard issues. Whether it was politically correct or not, he chose to fight those battles," he says.

"I feel like we lost a good city leader," explains District 1 Supervisor Robert Graham. "He was able to communicate with everyone. I think he surprised a lot of people... I think some of the fears people originally had about him did not pan out."

District 4 Supervisor Tony Greer was eager to hear Lumumba's thoughts on the Byram Clinton Corridor, a planned County parkway that does not go through the City of Jackson.

"He sees it as an economic development tool for the county. That's what I appreciated, it made us easy for us to work with him as a County," Greer tells us.

Supervisors McQuirter, Greer, and Graham expressed their condolences to Lumumba's family and to the City.
