Grand jury to hear case against former Metro officer

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The case against former Savannah-Chatham Metro Police officer Trina Mayes is going before a Chatham County grand jury Wednesday.

A proposed indictment against Mayes includes seven counts of making a false statement.

Mayes is accused of lying to the police chief, to police internal affairs, and to investigators hired by the city about her alleged romantic relationship with known convicted burglar, Rocky Sellers.

Mayes' attorney said the case is retaliation after Mayes' report of an affair she claims to have had with former Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Chief Willie Lovett.

Mayes' attorney sent a letter to the district attorney claiming his client is being treated unfairly, pointing out instances in which other officers were caught lying and not prosecuted.
