Woman charged with lying about assault

Posted: Updated:
CORDELE, GA (WALB) -

State officials say that Jan Michelle Smith was arrested after they determined that she filed a false report of an assault last August by her supervisor.

An investigation conducted by the Georgia State Board of Workers' Compensation's Enforcement Division has led to the arrest of Smith.

She was arrested last Wednesday, charged with two felony counts of Giving False Information to a Government Entity and one count of filing a False Report of a Crime.

Smith, age 48, is a Crisp County resident and a former employee of Harvey's Supermarket in Cordele. Officials say that Smith, while employed as a cashier at Harvey's grocery store, filed a police report on August 29, 2013 with the Cordele Police Department claiming that she had been assaulted two days earlier by her supervisor.

Cordele Police determined that it didn't happen, and no charges were filed against the store supervisor.

The investigation also revealed that in conjunction with Smith filing a false report of an assault, she then filed a false claim for workers' compensation insurance benefits with Harvey's insurance carrier.

Then she filed a claim against Harvey's with the State Board of Workers' Compensation alleging she had been injured as a result of an assault occurring at work.

Based on evidence obtained during the investigation conducted by the State Board of Workers' Compensation, they determined that Smith made it all up, and no assault ever occurred.

Additional charges of insurance fraud against Smith are pending.

The State Board of Workers' Compensation says that insurance fraud affects everyone. To report suspected workers' compensation fraud or an employer with no workers' compensation insurance coverage you can call the State Board of Workers' Compensation's Enforcement Division at (404) 657-7285 or go to our website at www.sbwc.georgia.gov and file a complaint on-line.
