Blue Crab House hopes to bring more than seafood to the beach

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - There's a new beachfront restaurant in Biloxi. Than Nguyen is the owner of Blue Crab House. It's the third restaurant he has opened in Biloxi, but his first on the beach. Like the sign says, you'll find more than just crab legs here.

"I'm just trying to do something different, and nobody has sushi on the beach. We are the first ones to have sushi on the beach in Biloxi," said Nguyen.

Cliff Kirkland, who is Vice President of Biloxi Main Street, hopes Nguyen's decision to build a new beach front restaurant will bring more than just sushi to the Mississippi Sound. He hopes it will also give other business owners the confidence to build here.

"With Than opening Blue Crab House, we're seeing a rebirth here and there's another restaurant going immediately to the east. The interest is there and it services not only our tourism population, but it's also a great opportunity for our local residents," said Kirkland.

According to Kirkland, since Hurricane Katrina, business owners have been slow to rebuild south of Highway 90. Even with the tax incentives, the risk is too high for some. For Nguyen it was all about following a dream.

"I always wanted to open one, and finally I had enough guts to you know say it's time to open one," said Nguyen.

The decor inside Blue Crab House has a coastal theme and an awesome beach front view. Their menu offers most of your gulf seafood favorites. With elements like a swing set for waiting customers and a sushi bar, Kirkland says Nguyen's business gives seaside restaurants a new flare.

"As one of my friends said recently, Biloxi's a lot more than casinos and Waffle Houses. Actually, what we're seeing is a contemporary spin on the beach front restaurants that Biloxi was known for when I was growing up," said Kirkland.

Blue Crab House has been open for about two weeks, but they plan to have a big grand opening the first week of March.
