BBQ masters gather in D'Iberville for prizes and bragging rights


It was a finger licking good battle in D'Iberville as local barbeque masters competed for top prizes and bragging rights. It was all part of the 8th Annual BBQ Throw-down and festival.

The sight of smoke and smell of barbecue helped usher in excitement for the BBQ Throw-down in D'Iberville. Nearly 40 teams competed from all across the south.

"The three categories are chicken, brisket and ribs. There is also a pork chop contest for the kids," organizer Barbie Cutrer said.

It didn't take long for the cook-off to heat up. In the kids' corner, there was Emily Trahan who traveled from New Iberia, LA. 

"I have competed in Huntsville, AL, Slidell, LA and Kansas City, MO," Emily said.

The young chef worked hard to make sure her pork chops would blowout the competition.

"I cook them with butter and I put barbeque sauce on them."

 In the adult corner, there was Rhonda Titus known to many here as the barbeque chicken queen.

"I think only because the guys can't be the queen so that gave it to me," said Titus.

She teamed up with her husband for the contest. She believes the tasty meat is just as important as the signature sauce.

"I make my own sauce because I haven't found one that complements the flavors of chicken.  That is secret. I would have to kill you," Titus said about her top secret, specialty sauce.

Then there was former 2011 champ Willie Nettles from Moss Point. He was confident his down south food would leave the judges begging for more.

"My expertise is the ribs falling off the bone and that juicy brisket. Last but not least, it is my favorite sauce and put that over the top of the meat for the winning trophy and award," Nettles said.

While they all agree battling for the best barbecue around is serious. There is lots of fun in competition.

"I just love it every year being around people and everybody tells little secrets and stuff. You can't tell the main thing, but every so often you can get something out of them," said Nettles.
