Jones County church floor collapses during youth group meeting

JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

Jones County authorities say the second floor of an activity center at Freedom Baptist Church in Myrick collapsed Wednesday evening.

A youth group was in the Family Life Center when the floor crashed onto the gymnasium floor. 79 kids ranging from grades 7-12 were in the building during the time of the collapse.

According to Jones County Sheriff Alex Hodge, the drop was about 12 feet.

35 people were injured during the incident. 19 of the injuries were triaged at the scene, 16 other injuries were serious enough to require hospital treatment. One of the injured youths was airlifted to Forrest General Hospital due to head trauma.

None of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening.
