Former Louisiana Governor Edwin Edwards says he is "considering" a run for Congress. Edwards disputed a Bloomberg news report posted online Wednesday that said he is definitely in the race for the 6th Congressional District. Congressman Bill Cassidy is vacating that seat to run for U.S. Senate.

"I'm not prepared to make an announcement," Edwards told WAFB's Jim Shannon. "If (the Bloomberg article) says I'm running, they're not authorized to say that," Edwards said. "All I told the man is that I was thinking about it but I'm not prepared to make an announcement."

The Bloomberg article, by reporter Albert R. Hunt, quoted Edwards as saying "I'm just figuring out all the legalities and how to set up a super PAC, and then I'm going."

Edwards, 86, spent eight years in federal prison on racketeering charges. Edwards says federal law does not prohibit a former convict from running for Congress. "There's no prohibition for my running for federal office," Edwards said.

The Bloomberg report noted that Edwards, who was governor four times, is "the most popular Democrat in modern Louisiana history." The report said Edwards told Bloomberg that he's seen private polls showing he would easily qualify for a run-off if he entered the race.

Edwards would not say when he might make an announcement. "I don't know when I'll decide, it might be tonight."

He says he has been considering a run for some time. "I think about a lot of things. I think about having another baby, but I'm not prepared to talk about it."
