Police recover championship rings stolen from legendary LSU coach

BATON ROUGE, LA (WVUE) - It was an attempt to rip off precious keepsakes earned over the course of an illustrious career.

Baton Rouge Police say three teenagers broke into legendary LSU baseball coach Skip Bertman's home early Saturday morning, and left with 21 of his championship rings.

According to investigators, the suspects broke into the home through a bathroom window. Bertman heard the commotion and struggled with one of the teens, before all three left with the huge haul.

Thanks to quick work by investigators, officers arrested the suspects Monday, and later recovered all of the stolen rings.

Two of the suspects are 16 years old and were booked into juvenile detention, while 18-year-old Moises Marquez was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. All three face a charge of simple burglary.

Police say Marquez is related to someone who had been working at the Bertman home. They say Marquez visited the home and, at some point, unlocked the bathroom window that he later used as an entry point.

At Walk-Ons Restaurant next to LSU's campus, some Tiger fans said were disgusted by the crime.

"It's horrible that anybody breaks into anybody's house, but especially Skip Bertman, who is an icon in Louisiana," said Michael Castello. "The fact that the Baton Rouge Police Department did their job and were able to recover the rings and put the perpetrators in jail is phenomenal."
