Women's group learns how to help unemployed

Posted: Updated:
OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) -

The Mississippi Business Women's group held their first meeting of the year Monday evening at the Ocean Springs Library to discuss ways to get a job.

Executive coach and trainer Laurie Johnson spoke to members about how they can help the unemployed find work.

Johnson discussed four elements to aid with a career change or to get you to the next step in your job search.

"The elements are the things that you engage in or surround yourself with like the people that support you, mentor you or coach you. In some ways the books that you read, the things that you listen to and take in and the self talk that you engage in, typically with yourself. Because sometimes when you're looking for employment or you're looking for a change you can be a little hard on yourself sometimes when things don't move as quickly. So really encouraging people to think positively and to change the way that they think of things and look at things and the way that they listen to themselves and to other things," Johnson explained.

Members say many people forget that the most important thing you can do when you're unemployed and looking for a job is networking.

"Networking volunteering and then also just connecting with a temporary agency , change to be more positive," said founder of Connections and Mississippi Business Women's member Jackie Castro-Cooper said.

The group meets every three months in the meeting room at the Ocean Springs library from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. To learn more about when the group will meet next or how they can help you find work call 228-424-2940 or 228-467-8470.
