Springfield police make 3 arrests late Friday, early Saturday

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

The Springfield Police Department made three arrests beginning late Friday night.

They said that 22-year-old Jean Rivera was arrested around 11:35 p.m. Friday near a house on Johnson Street.

Police said Rivera was carrying a backpack that contained 164 bags of heroin.

Rivera is being charged with possession of a class A substance with intent to distribute.

Police said he was already out on bail facing the same charge, plus carrying a firearm.

Shortly after 2 a.m. Saturday, police said they arrested Jonathan Betancourt.

They said the 25-year-old city resident was driving a Honda Accord that was reported stolen three days ago.

Police said Betancourt drove the vehicle into a snow bank, and they chased him down on foot.

Detectives are now looking to see if he is responsible for other stolen Hondas in the city.

And, police said Robert Brown was arrested just before midnight, facing attempted murder and animal cruelty charges.

Police said they responded to Brown's Keith Street home for a loud domestic disturbance call.

When they arrived, police said the 30-year-old had punched his roommate's dog in the face and body, and he then began to strangle his roommate.

All three suspects will be held for arraignment early next week.
