Local school district cuts High School gifted classes

Posted: Updated:
RANKIN COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

High School gifted classes are being cut at one local school district.

3 On Your Side has taken numerous calls from parents, telling us that Rankin County Public Schools is cutting its Venture program for 9th through 12th grade.

Venture is a program for gifted students.

Parents tell us that Venture teachers for the upper grades have received a letter telling them they will be placed elsewhere beginning next school year.

Earlier Friday, School Board President Cecil McCrory told us  cancellation of Venture likely will be taking place.

Late Friday afternoon, the School District confirmed the cuts with this e-mail:

Rankin County School District (RCSD) students currently enrolled in gifted classes will continue throughout this school year. However, for the 2014-2015 school year gifted classes will not be offered in grades 9th-12th

RCSD will continue to provide advanced placement classes and dual enrollment for students. RCSD has the largest on-campus duel enrollment program in Mississippi.

Rankin County School District is mandated by the state of Mississippi to provide gifted classes for grades 2nd-6th grade, but does not provide funding for grades 7th-12th.

The Common Core will cost close to $1 million to implement, and that's where funding will have to go.

McCrory says the board has not voted on it. Because Venture for grades 7-12 is not mandatory, he says, it may not require a board vote.
