KSLA News 12 Guest Editorial: Feb. 13th-Speak Your Peace

Posted: Updated:

Have you noticed how often public discourse deteriorates to shouting, name-calling and, at its worse, violence and hostility?

In today's fast-paced electronic society, we seem to have lost the ability to truly talk with one another. We've lost the art of "civility."

How do we return to civility and respect?

The Greater Shreveport Chamber of Commerce, the Community Foundation of North Louisiana and other Shreveport-Bossier partners are encouraging individuals, churches, businesses - everyone - to speak up, speak your mind, and speak your "peace." Yet, do so in a way that is respectful and productive.

It is okay and healthy to disagree with one another and to debate our differences. That is essential to our democratic form of government. Whether we're in conversation face-to-face, in public meetings, tweeting or posting comments online, it is not necessary to be combative, calling people names or insulting others in order to be heard and to make your point. There is a better way to speak your mind and at the same time, "Speak your peace!" There are nine simple tools to help remind us and guide us through healthy conversations.

Join us, Shreveport-Bossier! Let us return to civility by speaking up! Speak your mind, yet speak your peace! To learn more, check out our website at www.speakyourpeacesb.org and our Facebook page Speak Your Peace SB to see how.

I'm Rev. Lindy Broderick, Executive Vice President of the Greater Shreveport Chamber of Commerce.
