Safety during winter storm clean up; beware or ladders, chainsaws

MONCKS CORNER, SC (WCSC) -

You may want to think twice before getting on a ladder to clear broken branches.

"Be very careful if you're trying to do something yourself," said Robert Thompson, owner of Palmetto Tree Service.

Thompson's professional crew of climbers worked Thursday to clear branches from massive pine trees in the Woodlocke Apartments complex of Moncks Corner.

Thompson doesn't recommend using a ladder to do tree work.

"That's probably the biggest mistake that novices will do and try to use ladders. Branches will go down, hit the ground and hit the ladder," said Thompson.

"A lot of the branches in the trees, especially the pine trees accumulate so much ice that they will actually break and not fall to the ground. So they're hanging in the trees," said Thompson.

That alone is enough for some people to venture up a tree to cut down broken branches.

Thompson says with all his years in the business, he's heard many horror stories about visits to the ER.

"So many people go and buy chainsaws thinking they're going to save money by not using professionals and they end up with multiple types of injuries," said Thompson.

Thompson says the unexpected can happen when dealing with heavy machinery.

"Trees on the ground will have pressure points and they won't know that and they'll cut something and it'll swing and roll on them and hit them," said Thompson.

If a job looks too tough to get done, Thompson says hire a professional to take care of it.
