Musician beaten in Quarter is now awake, improving

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - A musician who was badly beaten in the French Quarter in January is steadily improving and has been moved to Touro Infirmary to continue his therapy.

While jazz bassist Doug Potter is still unable to speak, he is awake and conscious for extended periods of time and communicates with family members through eye contact and by squeezing their hands, according to his brother, Dave.

Money raised at a benefit and blood drive Sunday will help pay for Potter's medical expenses.

Potter was walking back to his car after playing a gig when he was attacked by two men. Police booked 20-year-old Reeshawn Arnold on one count of second-degree battery. Another suspect, 30-year-old Terrell Belvin, remains at large.
