Hattiesburg tornado volunteers gather at the Hardy Street Baptist Church Activity Center Wednesday night.
HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -
Many of the people who helped clean-up Hattiesburg after last February's tornado gathered Wednesday night to reflect on their efforts one year ago. Local and out-of-town volunteers and Hattiesburg police officers got together at Hardy Street Baptist Church's Activity Center for some food and fellowship.
For several weeks after the storm, the Activity Center was used as a headquarters for coordinating the efforts of more than 1,000 volunteers, who helped clear away debris and clean-up streets in the Hub City's Avenues neighborhood.
"Everybody is coming back together to see what we've done for this community and everybody has given back so much," said Kristy Thompson, a volunteer from Oak Grove.
"The recovery process has been good and the rebuilding process has been even better, so, I'm fortunate to be a part of that," said Brion Monroe, a volunteer from Jackson.
"It's an honor to be back here and very honored that the church has opened its doors to us," said Larry Strite, a volunteer from Bay Springs. "We feel very honored to help the people out that were devastated by the storm," he said.
The volunteers were also invited to attend Wednesday night services at Hardy Street Baptist Church.
