GREER, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Several flights were canceled Wednesday night at Greenville Spartanburg International Airport, but officials said the final flight of the night landed safely just before 9 p.m. despite the snow and ice.

A special "snow team" made up of scrapers, brush trucks, and snow blowers were scheduled to work nonstop throughout the night to keep the runways clear when flights resumed on Thursday, according to airport spokeswoman Roslyn Weston.

"With the sleet over the area, our crews will work extra hard tonight to keep us operational," Weston said.

Weston said the runways were also equipped with monitors that let the snow teams know which areas needed attention.

Despite the around-the-clock battle against the elements, Weston said there many delays and cancellations Wednesday, but she said those decisions were made by the individual airlines.

"We didn't turn anyone away," Weston said. "We were able to keep our runways open for every jet that wanted to land here. Our snow teams have been doing an amazing job to keep us operational through the storm."

Weston said crews were also clearing snow and ice from parking lots, sidewalks, and roadways so travelers can get in and out of the airport safely.

Weston said the airport had received numerous calls asking if it had closed, and she said as of Wednesday night, there were no plans to close GSP.

Weston advised all airline passengers to call their airline or check GSP's online departure/arrival board here to make sure their flights are still on schedule before making the trip to the airport.

As Ja-Naya Thompson's short life was celebrated, there were a lot of tears and hugs as hundreds of people paid their respects during the visitation and the funeral service. People told me they went to Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church for two reasons, to mourn the loss of five year old Ja-Naya and to show support to the parents who must now face life without their beloved child.More >>
