As the famous Dunkin Donuts commercial once said, "time to make the donuts". For Monroe Jackson that must seem like all the time.
Jackson runs several Monroe's Donuts and Bakery shops across the metro and every night he starts working at 11. After mixing the dough he makes the donuts throughout the night, so he can deliver the goods to his four locations.
His average day will not end until 6 p.m., and of those four locations two of them are brand new. So, you can imagine what that has done to Jackson's already heavy workload.
"First of all, a lot more hours," Jackson said with a grin.
He can say that with a smile, because the extra locations mean he has been making the "dough", so to speak, to justify his expansion.
One of the new locations is in Ridgeland at the corner of Rice Road and Old Canton Road. The other location may look familiar to donut fans in downtown Jackson.
It happens to be where Scurlock's Donuts called home for several years before it closed last December. Now, the Congress Street address is Jackson's and even he is amazed by the course of events.
"Never in my wildest dreams when we did come downtown, it would be here," Jackson said.
The foundation of Jackson's success was laid at his two original locations on McDowell Road and Medgar Evers Boulevard. After more than two decades in business this recent expansion has Jackson looking back at how far he has come.
"We started with nothing," Jackson recollected. "When I say nothing, I mean nothing, no money or anything. And so to stay in business for 20 years and to come this far there's no way you could it without God's help."
Jackson believes that part of God's blessings came in the form of the workers he has been able to surround himself with. He is able to employ eight people, including his son Monroe Jackson, Jr., at his four stores.
"In order to be successful you have to have good people," Jackson said. "You can't do it by yourself."
Faith, good people and a love of making these sweet treats has proven to be Monroe's recipe for success.
